The Tuesday Playlist No.64: 90’s UK Indie

The Tuesday Playlist No.64: 90’s UK Indie

For our latest playlist we take a journey back to the 1990’s and trawl through the backwaters of the UK indie scene. I always had a problem with the whole Britpop thing. Fabricated by music journalists as a lazy way of turning a bunch of dissparate acts in to a ‘movement’ it has since become the distorted lens through which many see the rise of indie music in the 90’s, with Oasis and Blur out front, and at most about a dozen other bands behind them. However, if you were there at the time (as I was) you’ll know there Read more »

The Tuesday Playlist No.63: Beatles Covers vol.1

The Tuesday Playlist No.63: Beatles Covers vol.1

We present 15 of the fabbest covers from the songbook of the greatest band of all time. We are huge Beatles fans here at MVD, and greatly enjoyed seeing the brand new Ron Howard film about their touring years a couple of weeks ago. The reason their music endures, or one of them at least, is because ultimately Lennon & McCartney, and later Harrison were truly great songwriters. Evidence of that can be found in the truly enormous amount of covers of their songs that exist. Pretty much every single one of them has been given an alternative treatment at Read more »

The Tuesday Playlist No.62: Early Rock Gems

The Tuesday Playlist No.62: Early Rock Gems

This week’s playlist is a journey through obscure(ish) rock from the early 70’s, or thereabouts… …a time when rock music had a particular flavour, caught between it’s blues-boogie and rock n’ roll roots and it’s more muscular uber-masculine high-voltage future. It was the age that spawned the power trio (for whom Cream were the model) amply represented here by Budgie, Grand Funk Railroad, Speed, Glue & Shinki, ZZ Top, Atomic Rooster, and the supergroup Beck, Bogert, and Appice, all featured alongside killer cuts from the likes of Humble Pie, Steppenwolf, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, and Ipissimus. Enjoy!

The Tuesday Playlist No.58: Brexit Blues

This week’s playlist is for the bewildered, angry, and heartbroken 48% of the UK population who lost in last week’s EU referendum… And y’know, anyone else who may feel like this wasn’t the wisest of decisions. And if you weren’t one of those, or just don’t give a fuck because you’re not from Britain and you quite reasonably think we’re a bunch of fucking idiots anyway, then you may enjoy it too. (P.s. We’re not here to tell anyone they are right or wrong – this is a music blog – so please direct any strong feelings you may have Read more »

Tuesday Playlist No.56: #NowPlaying.

The Tuesday Playlist No.53: Doctor, Doctor! (For the Junior Doctors)

The Tuesday Playlist No.53: Doctor, Doctor! (For the Junior Doctors)

This week’s playlist is our way of showing support for Britain’s Junior Doctors, a very wonderful group of people who make our beloved NHS tick… It’s not often we get politucal here on MVD as this, after all, a music site (for random politucal outbursts my personal Twitter account @BrownusPantius is the place to go) but not only do we very much support the Junior Doctors in their dispute with the government over their new contracts but we also realised it was a good excuse to pull together 15 of our favourite Doctor themed tracks from the likes of Dr Read more »

The Tuesday Playlist No. 51: Death and Taxes

The Tuesday Playlist No. 51: Death and Taxes

There has been a lot on the new lately due to the Panama Papers. Also, April is the end of the tax year here in the UK, so what else could we do but create a playlist with 15 great songs related to paying contributions, duty, tolls, tributes or whatever you want to call it. It is a secret to no one that the wealthiest out there use loopholes to avoid paying taxes, but it is news that there is finally evidence and documents to prove it. The scandal has already claimed some victims, with the resignation of the president Read more »
