‘Little Things’ by Animal Noise

‘Little Things’ by Animal Noise

From the South East of England comes a band who started by self-releasing their debut album in 2012, and have been steadily building a fan base and a reputation from their successful live gigs. Their new video released on November 17th is sexy, pulsating and vibrant. In the video they seem to be running from pixelated images, a “glitch” is what they call it. The song is exciting and intrusive. It kind of reminds me of Make it Wit Chu by Queens of the Stone Age. And that is a good thing.

New Reels: ‘Libre’ by Y La Bamba

Out of Portland and with Mexican roots comes this refreshing sound, reminiscent of Tune Yards but by no means a copy. Its a sound that is both new and familiar (at least to me) and brings an immediate smile to my face. I don´t know what to say about the video, because I think I am clearly influenced by images of a “character” commonly used in Carnaval de Barranquilla  but I am probably biased because she is from Mexican ascendance and its a different character that reminds me of the Colombian one…anyway, that’s not what’s important. What’s important its that just Read more »

New Reels: ‘Let´s Relate’ by Of Montreal

The new single by Of Montreal is funky, dark, catchy and a total ear worm. Of Montreal released a new single and video on September 1st. The third single from their album  Innocence Reaches. Its the band 14th album, and it seems fun, and different and interesting. (Something we confess have not considered them to be for a while). I love the lyrics (could not pick and have posted them all below). The video I think makes fun of the idea of a pop star and his posse of hangers-on. Or of all of us in today´s celebrity-filled world? A Read more »

Souvenir Shop Rock – Savoy Motel I feel like telling you about the band (which I have to confess is new to us) would spoil it, since we LOVE their official bio, so you absolutely must check it out. New Reels: ´Big Cat´by Wild Beasts

This week´s new reels is the new video by the band Wild Beasts from their new album ´Boy King´. Big Cat – Wild Beasts The lead single is Get My Bang and like Big Cat shows us that for their 5th studio album, they are more comfortable and bringing their anger to their music, a feeling which usually results in good lyrics and energetic songs. As Hayden Thorpe, lead singer of the band said “It became apparent that that guitar almost became the character within the songs, that phallic character, the all-conquering male. I’m letting my inner Byron fully out, I thought Read more »

New Reels: “River” by Leon Bridges

New Reels: “River” by Leon Bridges

Texan artist Leon Bridges finally releases the video for “River”, his first single from debut album Coming Home and shows all of us why it was he went viral on Spotify last year. River – Leon Bridges   This soul and gospel singer transcends genres with his acoustic gitar and gentle strumming, while he sings about remorse and wanting to go back home (Heaven, the Lord)…and though a strange lyrics to become viral when what we usually hear on the radio is a tad more mundane) we love that this young artist has made a space for himself in today´s music world. And there Read more »

New Reels: “Trap Tears” by Raury

New Reels: “Trap Tears” by Raury

Raury first came to our attention when he went on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert wearing an “I Love Mexico” t-shirt with Donald Trump´s name crossed out on the back and made all of us fall in love with him and his obvious talent. It was a great “silent” protest against Trump, and as he said so himself “Trump embodies separation, solving problems with anger, fear, and personal differences. I’m all about the opposite, about being inclusive and open.” We couldn’t agree with him more. Well, fortunately this 19 year old is here to stay by the looks and sound Read more »

New Reels: ‘Rub’ by Peaches

New Reels: ‘Rub’ by Peaches

This week we look at the definitley NSFW new video from Peaches, and artist who divides opinion in a way few others do and ask what this video says about the role of sex in modern pop music. Sex sells, or so the old adage goes, and nowhere more does it sell than in the world of music. From the swivelling hips of Elvis “The Pelvis” Presley through the ambiguous strutting and preening of Jagger, Bowie and Bolan, and later on the brazen flaunting of Madonna it’s been a key currency for artists wanting to tap in to something both Read more »

New Reels: ‘Blackstar’ by David Bowie

New Reels: ‘Blackstar’ by David Bowie

The elder statesman of art-rock returns with a surreal and slightly bewildering 10 minute long video. There’s been quite a buzz building around this new video from David Bowie since it was released last week, coming as it did with almost no pre-publicity save rumours that he was definitely working on something. Since his near total withdrawal from public life some years ago he’s managed to regain much of the enigma that made him such a fascinating artist in his 70’s heyday. The air of mystery so crucial to his persona was lost to a certain extent when he went Read more »

New Reels: “One Time” by Marian Hill

Though they have been around for a while, I have just recently discovered Marian Hill and cannot get the song out of my head so since its new to me, it is this week´s new reels. One Time – Marian Hill I discovered this fantastic duo which name is taken the two main characters from the musical The Music Man (Harold Hill and Marian Paroo) last week when I was catching up on my episodes of The Late Late Show with James Corden. New Reels: “Darlin’ Celsa” by Maestro

New music video “Darling Celsa” by Grammy Award winning producer, author and photographer Maestro. Darlin’ Celsa  – Maestro The French directing duo Parachutes take one of the themes that most humans on the planet can relate to, that of the feelings that can arise from looking at an old school yearbook album and turn it into one of the best videos I have seen this year and, to be honest, in the last couple of years. Ok, it is violent and dark, which is not my sort of thing, but it is done brilliantly and I can´t stop watching. American Read more »
