Released on January 27, and already with more than 2 million views, Jamiroquai are back with a new song, video and album after a 7-year hiatus. In Jay Kay´s words: “The inspiration for Automaton is in recognition of the rise of artificial intelligence and technology in our world today and how we as humans are beginning to forget the more pleasant, simple, and eloquent things in life and in our environment including our relationship with one another as human beings,” Their 8th album, also called Automaton, brings the signature funk style back, but the sound is feisty, it is poignant Read more »
Directed by Foxygen and Danny Lacy Edited by Foxygen and Danny Lacy Camera by Danny Lacy and Luke Suzimoto This song makes me think of Elton John´s “Tiny Dancer” and of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. But the guys in the video make me think of the strokes. Strange. which is why I had to post. Lankershim is a major street in Los Angeles famous for its prostitution levels. Which is why the lyrics are so poignant Well, we all spent time trying to make it But you spent your money getting high Well I know can make it Read more »
This L.A.-based trio, who were once mentored by Prince, have a brand new video for this track from their 2016 debut LP We Are KING. Twins Paris and Amber Strother and their friend Anita Bias actually started work on this album about 3 years ago, which was when ‘In The Meantime’ was first released. At the time no less a figure than Prince was championing them, who like an increasing amount of people had cottoned on to them after they started putting their self-written and produced tracks up on Soundcloud. The video, directed by David Devaux, is a clever animation Read more »
Le Couleur’s new single is a super-cool slice of funky French-Canadian disco-pop. Laurence Giroux-Do, Patrick Gosselin, and Steeven Chouinard aka Montreal-based trio Le Couleur released their debut album Origami back in 2010. Since then their have been a couple of EP’s, but it’s not until now that they have been able to deliver their second LP, entitled P.O.P. (available soon) and from that comes this new single and video. The video is a colourful yet actually fairly straightforward, rather 80’s looking band performance thing and is the directorial debut of Thierry Sirois, and as a complement to the track itself Read more »
From the South East of England comes a band who started by self-releasing their debut album in 2012, and have been steadily building a fan base and a reputation from their successful live gigs. Their new video released on November 17th is sexy, pulsating and vibrant. In the video they seem to be running from pixelated images, a “glitch” is what they call it. The song is exciting and intrusive. It kind of reminds me of Make it Wit Chu by Queens of the Stone Age. And that is a good thing.
The Indian duo’s new single comes with a wonderful animated video… Hailing from Kolkota and now signed to UK label Peace Frog Records, multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Nischay Parekh and percussionist/producer Jivraj Singh first achieved some kind of prominence in 2014 when the won a VH1 award for Best Newcomer, as well as a Jack Daniels Rock Award. two years later and they’ve just released their debut album Ocean and have followed that with this, taken from that album. The song itself is dreamy pop music with an experimental edge that doesn’t for one moment sound like it would come from the two rather bookish looking guys that Read more »
Out of Portland and with Mexican roots comes this refreshing sound, reminiscent of Tune Yards but by no means a copy. Its a sound that is both new and familiar (at least to me) and brings an immediate smile to my face. I don´t know what to say about the video, because I think I am clearly influenced by images of a “character” commonly used in Carnaval de Barranquilla but I am probably biased because she is from Mexican ascendance and its a different character that reminds me of the Colombian one…anyway, that’s not what’s important. What’s important its that just Read more »
Imagine a world filled with sensuality, lust, class and outstandingly good music. That is what upcoming French duo Her brings to the table. We are beyond excited with their new video release. I remember a song, it’s a house song I used to hear sometimes on mixes and Dj sets that said “House music, the French do it better”. Does anyone else remember that? In any case, this is what listening to the band Her has made me feel. It makes me remember Sebastian Teller, Daft Punk and even Gainsbourg. That sexy, deep and raw but very classic style that only French Read more »
This week´s new reels is just what we needed: GOOD! Souvenir Shop Rock – Savoy Motel I feel like telling you about the band (which I have to confess is new to us) would spoil it, since we LOVE their official bio, so you absolutely must check it out. Its like the sidekicks of different 70´s TV shows decided to get together and boogie. Hurray for revival bands and glittery hot pants. Their press release states “Burning brighter than a building on fire and 10 times groovier than most white acts on the scene today, Savoy Motel have all the potential to completely Read more »
This week´s new reels is the new video by the band Wild Beasts from their new album ´Boy King´. Big Cat – Wild Beasts The lead single is Get My Bang and like Big Cat shows us that for their 5th studio album, they are more comfortable and bringing their anger to their music, a feeling which usually results in good lyrics and energetic songs. As Hayden Thorpe, lead singer of the band said “It became apparent that that guitar almost became the character within the songs, that phallic character, the all-conquering male. I’m letting my inner Byron fully out, I thought Read more »
Unless you have been living under a rock, Queen B stunned the world her new, musically awesome and visually gorgeous album Lemonade earlier this year (here at MVD we love it). Well, now she has released a video for her song ´Sorry´and it includes Serena Williams and we get to see her sing the famous lyric “You better call Becky with the good hair“. Sorry – Beyoncé Regardless of who the song is actually written for, the song is catchy and innovative and the video is eye catching. Watching Serena William´s flaunting her body after all the body shaming she has Read more »
Canadian Electronic pop Junior Boys have released a second single from their first album in five years Big Black Coat, following the release of the title track Big Black Coat earlier this year. No One’s Business – Junior Boys This new video is evocative and distressing but the music is still chill and velvety. It shows a man doing shaving, wearing makeup and doing very creepy stuff. The set up itself is disturbing, but the song has their distinctive, classy sound. Love it!
Canadian indie band Islands are back with TWO RECORDS and we are loving their new material. “No Milk, No Sugar” – Islands The band has been busy. Their two albums Taste and Should I Remain Here at Sea will be out on May 13th. They have also announced a new tour. Some of you may remember Islands by their previous music and some of you may only know them because of relatively famous lead singer Nick Thorburn, A.K.A. Nick Diamons, who has also been lead singer in the bands The Unicorns, Th´Corn Gangg, Reefer and Human Highway, and who lately has been involved Read more »
Brooklyn based Frances Cone (Christina Cone, Andrew Doherty and Alex Baron) have released the single Arizona, from their upcoming album Late Riser and we found it soothing and intriguing. Arizona – Frances Cone The video is directed by Frank Jerky and tells the story of Christina Cone´s brother, director Stephen Cone and the experience of growing up with a Southern Baptist preacher as a father. Unfortunately, we dont know much more of them, we found another song by them and their official website but we are hoping to hear more and listen to the whole album once it´s out. *Featured image taken from http://static.flavors.me/dynamic_images/custom/65deaaef777349d58dc99496a2990c08
We here on MVD are pretty much aware of the fact that Adele has released a new video. However, since we also know it will be played everywhere we figure there is no need for us to go down that road so we have decided to go scouting for other videos released recently, and though this one was released in September, it is a refreshing and enigmatic video by the also refreshing and enigmatic Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Can’t Keep Checking My Phone Unknown Mortal Orchestra have been around for a while now, but somehow still seem a bit Read more »
