‘L’Amour Le Jour’ by Le Couleur

‘L’Amour Le Jour’ by Le Couleur

Le Couleur’s new single is a super-cool slice of funky French-Canadian disco-pop. Laurence Giroux-Do, Patrick Gosselin, and Steeven Chouinard aka Montreal-based trio Le Couleur released their debut album Origami back in 2010. Since then their have been a couple of EP’s, but it’s not until now that they have been able to deliver their second LP, entitled P.O.P. (available soon) and from that comes this new single and video. The video is a colourful yet actually fairly straightforward, rather 80’s looking band performance thing and is the directorial debut of Thierry Sirois, and as a complement to the track itself Read more »

New Reels: ‘Libre’ by Y La Bamba

Out of Portland and with Mexican roots comes this refreshing sound, reminiscent of Tune Yards but by no means a copy. Its a sound that is both new and familiar (at least to me) and brings an immediate smile to my face. I don´t know what to say about the video, because I think I am clearly influenced by images of a “character” commonly used in Carnaval de Barranquilla  but I am probably biased because she is from Mexican ascendance and its a different character that reminds me of the Colombian one…anyway, that’s not what’s important. What’s important its that just Read more »

New Reels: “Her” by Her

Imagine a world filled with sensuality, lust, class and outstandingly good music. That is what upcoming French duo Her brings to the table. We are beyond excited with their new video release. I remember a song, it’s a house song I used to hear sometimes on mixes and Dj sets that said “House music, the French do it better”. Does anyone else remember that? In any case, this is what listening to the band Her has made me feel. It makes me remember Sebastian Teller, Daft Punk and even Gainsbourg. That sexy, deep and raw but very classic style that only French Read more »

New Reels: ‘Wow’ by Beck

New Reels: ‘Wow’ by Beck

Everyone’s favourite multi-award winning, genre hopping, geek outsider singer/songwriter is back… …something which is, as you may well agree, a cause for some small kind of celebration. His 13th as-yet-untitled studio album drops around about sometime fairly soon and there is a justifiable sense of expectation, coming after 2014’s Grammy winner Morning Phase. ‘Wow’ is the second single (after last years ‘Dreams’) to be taken from that album and sees Beck in full b-boy mode. It’s funky, a little grime-y even, and comes with a video that at first appears to be a bunch of random stuff – Beck on Read more »

New Reels: ‘Don’t Leave Me In The Dark’ by Vesuvio Solo

I don´t know anything about them. Well, I know they are based in Montreal and this is their second album. I know that I love this song. I know the director (Alec Nicholas) has a fantasy of a disco Rapunzel. I know that its catchy, and nostalgic, and perfect for many a moods. I know their new album comes out in late September. I know I cant wait to learn and here more about them. Vesuvio Solo – “Don’t Leave Me In The Dark”

New Reels: ‘Let´s Relate’ by Of Montreal

New Reels: ‘Let´s Relate’ by Of Montreal

The new single by Of Montreal is funky, dark, catchy and a total ear worm. Of Montreal released a new single and video on September 1st. The third single from their album  Innocence Reaches. Its the band 14th album, and it seems fun, and different and interesting. (Something we confess have not considered them to be for a while). I love the lyrics (could not pick and have posted them all below). The video I think makes fun of the idea of a pop star and his posse of hangers-on. Or of all of us in today´s celebrity-filled world? A Read more »

New Reels: ‘Drowning’ by Mick Jenkins feat. BADBADNOTGOOD

The upcoming Chicago rapper collaborates with Canada’s BBNG on his latest single which comes with this thought-provoking video. Mick Jenkins has been building an underground reputation for the last couple of years as an intelligent, creative and socially-conscious rapper via a series of mixtapes and one EP Wave[s] which was released in August of last year. This month sees the release of his debut LP The Healing Component from which this new single is taken. As for BADBADNOTGOOD, they’re a Canadian three piece specialising in intrumental music that covers an experimental area in and between free jazz, hip-hop, electronica, and Read more »

New Reels: ‘Love Invaders’ by Fatima Yamaha

New Reels: ‘Love Invaders’ by Fatima Yamaha

This week’s hot thang is a rather delicious slice of electro-funk from the rather Oriental-sounding Fatima Yamaha… According to her Facebook bio she is “the girl between two worlds” borne of Turkish and Japanese parents. She is in fact the latest alter-ego of Dutch producer Bas Bron, who has released stuff under various guises including Bastian, Comtron (with drummer Rimer Veenan), Seymour Bits, and Gifted. As Fatima Yamaha he’s released a couple of EP’s, a cult-hit single ‘What’s A Girl To Do’, and a 2015 album called Imaginary Lines from which ‘Love Invaders’ is taken. Not a new song then, Read more »

New Reels: “Souvenir Shop Rock” by Savoy Motel

This week´s new reels is just what we needed: GOOD! Souvenir Shop Rock – Savoy Motel I feel like telling you about the band (which I have to confess is new to us) would spoil it, since we LOVE their official bio, so you absolutely must check it out. Its like the sidekicks of  different 70´s TV shows  decided to get together and boogie. Hurray for revival bands and glittery hot pants. Their press release states “Burning brighter than a building on fire and 10 times groovier than most white acts on the scene today, Savoy Motel have all the potential to completely Read more »

New Reels: ‘Lenny Kravitz’ by Alexandre Chatelard

New Reels: ‘Lenny Kravitz’ by Alexandre Chatelard

Presenting the Parisienne artist’s brand new and slightly NSFW video. Alexandre Chatelad has been releasing music since 2009 but only got round to releasing his debut album this year. Entitled Elle était une fois it is an exuberant, adventurous and wholly charming leftfield electro-pop album that gets the big thumbs up from us here at MVD. Taken from the album is latest single ‘Lenny Kravitz’ the second single we’ve reviewed in recent times which is named after a famous musician. The video, directed by Allen & Smithee, can be seen as an old man’s fantasy which ultimately doesn’t turn out Read more »

New Reels: ‘Warts’ by Hinds

The Spanish indie group’s latest single comes with a super-stylish video. One of MVD’s current albums-of-the-year is Leave Me Alone the debut from this female four-piece who hail from Madrid. Full of melodic hooks and ragged charm, it’s a must-have album for those that don’t already have it (that’s an order), and must-listen-to album for those that already do. Originally a two-piece consisting of singer/guitarists Carlotta Cosials and Ana García Perrote called Deers,  in 2014 after releasing their critically lauded debut single, the 2-track Demo, they recruited Ade Martin (bass) and Dutch-born Amber Grimbergen (drums) and somewhere along the way Read more »

New Reels: ‘Leadlight’ by Julia Jacklin

New Reels: ‘Leadlight’ by Julia Jacklin

The great new single from this Australian singer-songwriter. There’s been a lot of good music coming out of Australia in recent years, some of which has been covered by us in the past. And now we bring you Julia Jacklin, who hails from the Blue Mountains, and has her first album Don’t Let The Kids Win coming out in October. In the meantime, and following on from ‘Pool Party’ released back in March, we have her second single the wonderfully moody ‘Leadlight’ accompanied by a self-directed video shot in her actual old school hall. With the forthcoming album already garnering Read more »

New Reels: “Drinkee” by Sofi Tukker

The tune that Apple made famous finally gets a video of its own… We at MVD first heard this track last year, Shazam-ing it in a Liverpool clothes shop after it had made us both nod our heads in approval. Turns out it had also been doing the rounds in this Apple watch commercial and thus also getting it’s earworm guitar hook in to people’s heads that way. Since then the New York based duo – Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern – have released two more singles: Matadora and Hey Lion both of which feature influences from South America amongst Read more »

New Reels: ‘Life Itself’ by Glass Animals

The wonderful Glass Animals are back (so much love still for their song Gooey) with a new album (How to be a Human Being, to be released on August 2016) and a strange and unnerving video to go with their new single. Life Itself – Glass Animals The video was released on June 6, 2016 and its directed by photographer turned video director Neil Krug. He has also directed videos by Boards of Canada and Ladytron. Glass Animals hail from Oxford, and had great success especially in America (selling almost half a million copies) with their debut album Zaba. They have played festivals Read more »
