‘No Plan’ by David Bowie

‘No Plan’ by David Bowie

With a new E.P. released on what would have been his 70th birthday comes this new video for one of his last recordings. This first year after Bowie’s death has been a strange one. The old adage that if you’re famous you’re never more popular than than after you die has certainly been in evidence with interest in his body of work being greater now than at anytime in the last couple of decades or so. His final album, Blackstar, has proved to be a last great flourish from an artist who never stopped moving and exploring new ground. Immediately Read more »

‘Fire’ by Justice

‘Fire’ by Justice

I don’t know what makes me happier: that Justice is back or that the video features goddess, Susan Sarandon!   Justice ( Jus†ice) is a French electronic music duo formed by Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay . My God, I am really having a love affair with french electronic music, it´s nothing new, but it is growing by the second. I am still not over D.A.N.C.E. and they have now released a new album which includes this  gorgeous, classic french sound, and a video that makes us remember Thelma and Louise and shows as a gorgeous Sarandon still swinging…both the band and her will Read more »

‘Little Things’ by Animal Noise

‘Little Things’ by Animal Noise

From the South East of England comes a band who started by self-releasing their debut album in 2012, and have been steadily building a fan base and a reputation from their successful live gigs. Their new video released on November 17th is sexy, pulsating and vibrant. In the video they seem to be running from pixelated images, a “glitch” is what they call it. The song is exciting and intrusive. It kind of reminds me of Make it Wit Chu by Queens of the Stone Age. And that is a good thing.

‘Make America Great Again’ by Pussy Riot

‘Make America Great Again’ by Pussy Riot

With everyone nervously awaiting the imminent U.S. elections we take a look at this topical new offering from Russia’s most-famous political-activist intellectual art-punk group. The last time we reviewed Pussy Riot on this site it was with a song protesting the killing of Eric Garner and, more broadly, racism, and police brutality and state-sanctioned violence. And now they’ve released three new videos in a week, each dealing with a different topic, and in ‘Make America Great Again’ both eyes are firmly fixed on the U.S. elections and in particular Donald Trump, the man who has defined, for better or for Read more »

New Reels: ‘Tough Luck’ by Sneaks

New Reels: ‘Tough Luck’ by Sneaks

As her 2015 debut album gets a re-release on her new label Sneaks also presents this fabulously surreal new video for the opening track. Sneaks is essentially the one-woman project of Eva Moolchan, who hails from Washington, D.C. and who apparently wrote much of Gymnastics whilst still at school, suggesting she’s also sickeningly young to be turning out such a confident debut. MVD is in no way jealous though. Not at all. The album consists of 10 tracks, all but one of which are less than 2 minutes long and most of which feature little more than drums and bass Read more »

New Reels: “Her” by Her

New Reels: “Her” by Her

Imagine a world filled with sensuality, lust, class and outstandingly good music. That is what upcoming French duo Her brings to the table. We are beyond excited with their new video release. I remember a song, it’s a house song I used to hear sometimes on mixes and Dj sets that said “House music, the French do it better”. Does anyone else remember that? In any case, this is what listening to the band Her has made me feel. It makes me remember Sebastian Teller, Daft Punk and even Gainsbourg. That sexy, deep and raw but very classic style that only French Read more »

New Reels: ‘Don’t Leave Me In The Dark’ by Vesuvio Solo

New Reels: ‘Don’t Leave Me In The Dark’ by Vesuvio Solo

I don´t know anything about them. Well, I know they are based in Montreal and this is their second album. I know that I love this song. I know the director (Alec Nicholas) has a fantasy of a disco Rapunzel. I know that its catchy, and nostalgic, and perfect for many a moods. I know their new album comes out in late September. I know I cant wait to learn and here more about them. Vesuvio Solo – “Don’t Leave Me In The Dark”

New Reels: ‘Let´s Relate’ by Of Montreal

New Reels: ‘Let´s Relate’ by Of Montreal

The new single by Of Montreal is funky, dark, catchy and a total ear worm. Of Montreal released a new single and video on September 1st. The third single from their album  Innocence Reaches. Its the band 14th album, and it seems fun, and different and interesting. (Something we confess have not considered them to be for a while). I love the lyrics (could not pick and have posted them all below). The video I think makes fun of the idea of a pop star and his posse of hangers-on. Or of all of us in today´s celebrity-filled world? A Read more »

New Reels: ‘Drowning’ by Mick Jenkins feat. BADBADNOTGOOD

The upcoming Chicago rapper collaborates with Canada’s BBNG on his latest single which comes with this thought-provoking video. Mick Jenkins has been building an underground reputation for the last couple of years as an intelligent, creative and socially-conscious rapper via a series of mixtapes and one EP Wave[s] which was released in August of last year. This month sees the release of his debut LP The Healing Component from which this new single is taken. As for BADBADNOTGOOD, they’re a Canadian three piece specialising in intrumental music that covers an experimental area in and between free jazz, hip-hop, electronica, and Read more »

New Reels: ‘Love Invaders’ by Fatima Yamaha

New Reels: ‘Love Invaders’ by Fatima Yamaha

This week’s hot thang is a rather delicious slice of electro-funk from the rather Oriental-sounding Fatima Yamaha… According to her Facebook bio she is “the girl between two worlds” borne of Turkish and Japanese parents. She is in fact the latest alter-ego of Dutch producer Bas Bron, who has released stuff under various guises including Bastian, Comtron (with drummer Rimer Veenan), Seymour Bits, and Gifted. As Fatima Yamaha he’s released a couple of EP’s, a cult-hit single ‘What’s A Girl To Do’, and a 2015 album called Imaginary Lines from which ‘Love Invaders’ is taken. Not a new song then, Read more »

New Reels: “Souvenir Shop Rock” by Savoy Motel

New Reels: “Souvenir Shop Rock” by Savoy Motel

This week´s new reels is just what we needed: GOOD! Souvenir Shop Rock – Savoy Motel I feel like telling you about the band (which I have to confess is new to us) would spoil it, since we LOVE their official bio, so you absolutely must check it out. Its like the sidekicks of  different 70´s TV shows  decided to get together and boogie. Hurray for revival bands and glittery hot pants. Their press release states “Burning brighter than a building on fire and 10 times groovier than most white acts on the scene today, Savoy Motel have all the potential to completely Read more »

New Reels: ‘Lenny Kravitz’ by Alexandre Chatelard

New Reels: ‘Lenny Kravitz’ by Alexandre Chatelard

Presenting the Parisienne artist’s brand new and slightly NSFW video. Alexandre Chatelad has been releasing music since 2009 but only got round to releasing his debut album this year. Entitled Elle était une fois it is an exuberant, adventurous and wholly charming leftfield electro-pop album that gets the big thumbs up from us here at MVD. Taken from the album is latest single ‘Lenny Kravitz’ the second single we’ve reviewed in recent times which is named after a famous musician. The video, directed by Allen & Smithee, can be seen as an old man’s fantasy which ultimately doesn’t turn out Read more »

New Reels: ´Big Cat´by Wild Beasts

New Reels: ´Big Cat´by Wild Beasts

This week´s new reels is the new video by the band Wild Beasts from their new album ´Boy King´. Big Cat – Wild Beasts The lead single is Get My Bang and like Big Cat shows us that for their 5th studio album, they are more comfortable and bringing their anger to their music, a feeling which usually results in good lyrics and energetic songs. As Hayden Thorpe, lead singer of the band said “It became apparent that that guitar almost became the character within the songs, that phallic character, the all-conquering male. I’m letting my inner Byron fully out, I thought Read more »

New Reels: “Drinkee” by Sofi Tukker

New Reels: “Drinkee” by Sofi Tukker

The tune that Apple made famous finally gets a video of its own… We at MVD first heard this track last year, Shazam-ing it in a Liverpool clothes shop after it had made us both nod our heads in approval. Turns out it had also been doing the rounds in this Apple watch commercial and thus also getting it’s earworm guitar hook in to people’s heads that way. Since then the New York based duo – Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern – have released two more singles: Matadora and Hey Lion both of which feature influences from South America amongst Read more »

New Reels ´Sorry´by Beyoncé

New Reels ´Sorry´by Beyoncé

Unless you have been living under a rock, Queen B stunned the world her new, musically awesome and visually gorgeous album Lemonade earlier this year (here at MVD we love it). Well, now she has released a video for her song ´Sorry´and it includes Serena Williams and we get to see her sing the famous lyric “You better call Becky with the good hair“. Sorry – Beyoncé Regardless of who the song is actually written for, the song is catchy and innovative and the video is eye catching. Watching Serena William´s flaunting her body after all the body shaming she has Read more »
