The Tuesday Playlist No. 31: John Lennon

The Tuesday Playlist No. 31: John Lennon

“We all looked up to John. He was older and he was very much the leader – he was the quickest wit and the smartest and all that kind of thing.” Paul McCartney John Winston Lennon would have turned 75, and here at MVD we are celebrating him with a whole #themeweek in his honor, so of course today is no exception and we have chosen 15 of his finest songs (as a solo artist). We hope you like this selection.

Double Fantasy by John Lennon & Yoko Ono

Double Fantasy by John Lennon & Yoko Ono

On October 9th John Lennon would have turned 75 years old. We look at the Album that would be his last. Writing about this album is bitter-sweet. Especially around important dates in John´s life. So without further ado, one of the greatest albums of the eighties, Double Fantasy. As many of you know, we here at MVD are Beatles fans. I personally think there is music and then, in another category, there is The Beatles and Nina Simone. But first and foremost there the Fab four. If there were to be an apocalypse and all music would be gone and Read more »

The Lost Boys: Vampires in the 80´s.

The Lost Boys: Vampires in the 80´s.

“Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire”. Is it a Horror Movie? A Comedy Horror Movie? A Thriller? Do we care? It is a gem of the eighties, entertaining, filled with stars, hotties and of course, a KILLER soundtrack! The Lost Boys Trailer (1987) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_lwtRMg0ts This movie is remembered by many for different reasons. It holds a special place in my heart because it was actually the first time I was introduced to The Doors. Ok, Ok, so it was not properly them but I NEVER forgot the song, could Read more »

I Want My MTV: ‘Money For Nothing’ by Dire Straits

I Want My MTV: ‘Money For Nothing’ by Dire Straits

We deconstruct one of the most remembered videos from the 1980´s and the MTV era: Money for Nothing by The Dire Straits. Although because of a word used in the lyrics the song may be controversial in today´s “politically correct” language, and it was banned from Canadian radio stations for a while (the ban ended on August 31rst, 2011 leaving it to each radio station discretion whether to play it or not, no one can deny this song´s classic video status. It managed to transcend its time and will forever be remembered. Money For Nothing – Dire Straits The video Read more »

The 80´s: The decade, the music, the playlist!

The 80´s: The decade, the music, the playlist!

The 80´s!!!! Our take on the decade is finally here! Now we’re talking! Culture, fashion and film This post could actually be 10 posts just on culture, fashion and film…I think we could do soundtrack playlist from movies of the eighties, then another playlist for seventies sitcoms and TV series, and another one on eighties fashion. It is a never ending source of amusement and fun! The eighties are seen as a decade of excess and extremes. From Boy George to Madonna, artists, especially musicians, set out to push boundaries of what was conventional. Disco was on its way out, Read more »

Milli Vanilli – Girl You Know It’s TRUE?!?!?!?!

Milli Vanilli – Girl You Know It’s TRUE?!?!?!?!

The biggest scandal in music videos history…Milli Vanilli. I have screwed up or dare I say “we”, we have screwed up. I think we lost our north. It is time we face reality and apologize for an inexcusable miss…we dared to write about music videos and spend productive hours watching clips and we forgot to talk about Milli Vanilli! The biggest scandal in music videos history…a scheme basically created by the existence and predominance of music videos, the industry´s worse low point (although there are other terrible ones out there like exploitation and revenue appropriation and well, taking artists and turning Read more »

Madonna: Videos by albums. Take 3.

Madonna: Videos by albums. Take 3.

A look at Madonna´s third album “True Blue”. Time to resume my analysis of Madonna´s videos album by album. I am enjoying revisiting her although the album I’m looking at today isn’t one of her best, or not one that has great videos anyway… Her third album is “True Blue”. It was released in June 30th, 1986. It was a success worldwide, and it was a more mature album, dealing with work and relationships, the album was dedicated to her then husband Sean Penn. She also incorporated elements of classical music into her pop music, and received positive reviews from Read more »

Madonna Videos by albums: Take 2 “Material Girl”

Madonna Videos by albums: Take 2 “Material Girl”

Madonna´s Album “Material Girl”, a great follow up album. I love writing about music videos because it is a habit I had lost. In the late 80´s and 1990s I would spend whole afternoons with MTV on while I did my homework, but somewhere along the way, I stopped watching them. I don’t know if I had said that before, but I was thinking about it when I started writing this post. Today, I am happy to be discussing Madonna´s videos because I get to go back and look at them with a different eye and re-evaluate what I thought. Read more »

Madonna: Videos by Albums. Take One

Madonna: Videos by Albums. Take One

Well friends, it is finally time to tackle the Queen of Pop and the most important female superstar of the last 30 years. She is also one of the artists that got the importance of music videos and knew how to ride that wave. She is unique, influential, talented, intelligent and undeniably an icon and the world´s most famous female pop performer. Since she has a long career and a long video trajectory, I think the best way to approach this is by choosing a video (or 2 when they are extremely good) per album. Let´s star with her first Read more »

I belong to you Lenny Kravitz.

I belong to you Lenny Kravitz.

The sexy video for “I belong to You” by Lenny Kravitz “You lift me from up above Your unconditional love Takes me to paradise I belong to you And you You belong to me too You make my life complete You make me feel so sweet” I wanted to start this post with the lyrics to the song and video I wanted to talk about today because the meaning of the song might be lost when I am talking about Lenny Kravitz. Sadly, I have to admit that I no longer harbor the same feelings for Mr. Kravitz that I Read more »

A Stalker’s Tale: Darkness in the heart of Lionel Richie’s ‘Hello’…

A Stalker’s Tale: Darkness in the heart of Lionel Richie’s ‘Hello’…

Ok, we’ve been doing this for nearly 6 months now and I feel the time has come to tackle one of the most (in)famous music promos of all time, a video that purports to tell a heart-warming tale of seemingly unrequited love finally being resolved (requited, even). It’s a video that reeks of the 80’s and is one of the most memorable of that decade, and yet there is something – a few things, in fact – that has always bothered me about it, and it is these sinister anomalies which I intend to explore in detail today… On the Read more »

Pink Cadillac: Sex, cars and dancing mechanics.

Pink Cadillac: Sex, cars and dancing mechanics.

The history of the car song is a long and varied one, and the use of the motor-vehicle as a lyrical subject is one that is drenched in metaphor and euphemism. Indeed, the history of such things is almost as old as the car itself. In the 1930’s legendary blues singer Robert Johnson’s first single was the self-penned ‘Terraplane Blues’ which included choice couplets like “I’d said I flash your lights, mama, you horn won’t even blow” and “I’m gonna heist your hood, mama, I’m bound to check your oil”. More famous examples would come later, not least the soul Read more »

Purple Rain: When Prince was the King.

Purple Rain: When Prince was the King.

A deconstruction of one of the best music films ever made. Here in the UK there has been quite a stir in the last few weeks regarding what many see as the long-overdue reappearance of an artist whose fame and reputation are maybe only outstripped by the sheer force of his musical talent. Prince (for it is he) has been playing a series of reportedly fantastic live shows, airing new material, and even appeared at the recent BRIT awards, although having been gratuitously ‘selfied’ by host and ‘comedian’ James Corden he may now be regretting that. It seems the Man Read more »

Girls On Film: social commentary or sexual fantasy?

Girls On Film: social commentary or sexual fantasy?

One of the most chauvinistic videos ever made: Girls on Film by Duran Duran. An essay. For this Friday’s post we’ll be taking a look at a video which marks the start of two separate strands we’ll be developing over the coming months. Firstly, we’re going to be taking a serialistic look at Duran Duran, one of the great videos bands of the 80’s. And secondly, it marks the first of a series of posts looking at some of the more controversial videos ever made, videos that sparked debate, ruffled feathers and achieved a high level of notoriety. Taken from Read more »

Together but apart: Two pop tales for St. Valentine’s Day.

Together but apart: Two pop tales for St. Valentine’s Day.

A look at Renee & Renato´s “Save your love” and the hardships of long distance relationships and the tragedy of being separated on Valentine´s Day. So it’s Valentine’s day, a time for love to be declared, for romance to blossom, for those already in love to shower their partners with flowers and affection. If you have someone special in your life it is a day to let them know just how special they really are. And what I want to do today is take a look at two great pop romances, but two that have a common thread – that Read more »
