One of the best females artists from Britan ever, Amy Winehouse left us too soon. Now a famous member of the 27 club, she left some extraordinary music behind. We take a look at 5 of our favorite performances, some cheerful and with huge crowds, other melancholic and intimate. We simply can’t pick a favorite.
In December 2006, Amy Winehouse (22 years old at the time) traveled to Dingle, Ireland to record the Irish music TV series “Other Voices“. The recording took place at the church of St. James, a 200-year-old beautiful small chapel. Her 6 song – performance mesmerized all those attending and anyone who watches the footage.
Amy Winehouse performed “Rehab” for her American television debut on Late Show with David Letterman March 12, 2007. Now, this performance consolidated her popularity in the US.
“I did go to rehab but did not last long: “I did, for just 15 minutes. I went in and said, ‘Hello’ and explained that I drink because I’m in love and have f***** up the relationship. Then I walked out.”
Critics at the time said she could not translate her “cabaret- lounge” style to the crowd, but I have to disagree. I think her voice is flawless and she manages to bring out the sun in that rainy day. She was clearly nervous, and probably of her head, as her eyes imply, but her soulful presence showed everyone that 23-year old was the real deal.
The last two videos are from the live album “I Told You I was Trouble” which was filmed on May 29th, 2007 and released on November 5 that same year. It was filmed at Sheperd´s Bush Empire in London.
Amy Winehouse was more than a young female talented singer and songwriter. More than a Grammy award winner musician, or someone who had commercial success and was praised by critics. She was a true artist. She was not only the voice of her generation, she was the voice of women worldwide. Her soulful tone is not something you often find. In my book, she is up there with Ella, Billy, Sarah, and Nina. She poured her spirit in her music, and she still feels relevant and present.
