Amy Winehouse´s confessional, soulful, intimate and heartbreak anthem album that is “Back to Black”.
Amy Winehouse´s second and final studio album gives us a glimpse into the short life and brilliant musician and sensitive soul that she was.
Back To Black – Amy Winehouse
Amy Jade was an English singer and songwriter, sadly now a part of the 27 Club. Since her debut album “Frank” she gained critical success with her music showing influences of soul, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Amy was also known for her struggles with alcohol and drug abuse, bulimia, mental health issues and sometimes violent behavior. She is less know for how charitable she was. She donated her charity to more than 35 charities worldwide, mainly focusing on helping children and raising awareness on breast cancer. She was also featured on an album with other musicians to raise awareness on climate change. Amy died of alcohol poisoning on July 23rd, 2001.
Rehab – Amy Winehouse
“Rehab” was the first single release of the album. It is an autobiographical song she wrote and was produced Mark Ronson. The song make it to no. 7 ion the U.K. and Number 9 in the U.S. It was her only Top 10 hit in the U.S. The song is great and is probably one of the most important songs of the decade and has been covered by several artists. I love this cover. The song won 3 Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Vocal Performance. She could not attend the Grammy Ceremony because she failed a drug test, but her performances was transmitted live from England. Please excuse the quality of the video…
Grammy Performance – Amy Winehouse
The album was nominated for 5 Grammys. It gave Amy the record for most wins by a female artist in the same night and she also became the first British woman to win 5 Grammys. It sold 3.58 million copies in the U.K. and more than 20 million copies worldwide. It is the second best selling album in the U.K. in the 21st century.
‘You Know I’m No Good’ – Amy Winehouse
The album had 5 singles, the ones posted here and: “Tears Dry on Their Own” and “Love is a losing game”. Both fantastic songs also. But the album has other gems like “Me and Mr. Jones”, “Just Friends” and “Wake Up Alone”.
Besides giving us her voice, lyrics and soul, Amy Winehouse influenced music by making it easier for female artist to get record deals, as after the success of the album, record labels took chances in artists like Adele, Duffy, Florence and the Machine and Little Boots. But for many of her fans, it is a more personal relationship she left us with. Amy is an old friend. That one who is a little wilder than the rest of of, reckless, but the one with the guts to say things we want to, the one you share your darkest secrets with and of course, the one with the incomparable voice.
