I don´t know anything about them. Well, I know they are based in Montreal and this is their second album. I know that I love this song. I know the director (Alec Nicholas) has a fantasy of a disco Rapunzel. I know that its catchy, and nostalgic, and perfect for many a moods. I know their new album comes out in late September. I know I cant wait to learn and here more about them. Vesuvio Solo – “Don’t Leave Me In The Dark”
The new single by Of Montreal is funky, dark, catchy and a total ear worm. Of Montreal released a new single and video on September 1st. The third single from their album Innocence Reaches. Its the band 14th album, and it seems fun, and different and interesting. (Something we confess have not considered them to be for a while). I love the lyrics (could not pick and have posted them all below). The video I think makes fun of the idea of a pop star and his posse of hangers-on. Or of all of us in today´s celebrity-filled world? A Read more »
On August 28th, 2016 Latin America´s heart broke. “Il Divo de Juarez”, “JuanGa”, Juan Gabriel, died of a heart attack while on Tour in the United States. I rang my mom at 10:30 p.m. when I heard the news, and I am still coming to terms with it. Hasta Que Te Conocí – Juan Gabriel Juan Gabriel was the singer my mom and her friends listened to. A good singer, a great entertainer and a BRILLIANT songwriter, he taught my generation about love and heartbreak to through his songs and his voice and also unforgettable musical partnership with Rocio Durcal. Released in 1955, Sinatra´s 9th studio album takes us on a journey of love lost and loneliness with his magnificent voice and perfect intonation which is as relevant today as it was back then. With impeccable track listing, this is one of the greatest albums of all time. In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning – Frank Sinatra The doomed relationship between Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner would give birth to this heartbreaking album, which Sinatra took only a few days to record. He had wanted to do an LP for a while, in a time where record companies Read more »
This week´s new reels is just what we needed: GOOD! Souvenir Shop Rock – Savoy Motel I feel like telling you about the band (which I have to confess is new to us) would spoil it, since we LOVE their official bio, so you absolutely must check it out. Its like the sidekicks of different 70´s TV shows decided to get together and boogie. Hurray for revival bands and glittery hot pants. Their press release states “Burning brighter than a building on fire and 10 times groovier than most white acts on the scene today, Savoy Motel have all the potential to completely Read more »

This week´s new reels is the new video by the band Wild Beasts from their new album ´Boy King´. Big Cat – Wild Beasts The lead single is Get My Bang and like Big Cat shows us that for their 5th studio album, they are more comfortable and bringing their anger to their music, a feeling which usually results in good lyrics and energetic songs. As Hayden Thorpe, lead singer of the band said “It became apparent that that guitar almost became the character within the songs, that phallic character, the all-conquering male. I’m letting my inner Byron fully out, I thought Read more »
A song that immediately brings back a time and place (dated but still sounds good). A great sample. A colorful video. 1991 at its best. Set Adrift On Memory Bliss – PM Dawn For our second One Hit Wonder post we thought we would pay tribute to recently deceased Attrell Cordes aka Prince Be, founding member of PM Dawn last Friday, 17th of June from renal kidney disease. P.M. Dawn was an American hip hop act (the third hip-hop act to top Billboard Hot 100 in 1991) formed by Prince Be and Jarrett Cordes. Their first album was critically acclaimed, and Read more »
Unless you have been living under a rock, Queen B stunned the world her new, musically awesome and visually gorgeous album Lemonade earlier this year (here at MVD we love it). Well, now she has released a video for her song ´Sorry´and it includes Serena Williams and we get to see her sing the famous lyric “You better call Becky with the good hair“. Sorry – Beyoncé Regardless of who the song is actually written for, the song is catchy and innovative and the video is eye catching. Watching Serena William´s flaunting her body after all the body shaming she has Read more »
The wonderful Glass Animals are back (so much love still for their song Gooey) with a new album (How to be a Human Being, to be released on August 2016) and a strange and unnerving video to go with their new single. Life Itself – Glass Animals The video was released on June 6, 2016 and its directed by photographer turned video director Neil Krug. He has also directed videos by Boards of Canada and Ladytron. Glass Animals hail from Oxford, and had great success especially in America (selling almost half a million copies) with their debut album Zaba. They have played festivals Read more »
On December 16th, 1993 Nirvana recorded an acoustic performance in New York City at the Sony Music Studios as part of the series MTV Unplugged. The band played their own songs, including lesser known ones, as well as covers by Meat Puppets and David Bowie. The show (and live album) became a classic. The album was released on Nov. 1, 1994 after Kurt Cobain´s death and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard. All Apologies – Nirvana The album went platinum five times and also won a Grammy for Beat Alternative Music Album. It was released on DVD in 2007. When they were approached Read more »
Canadian Electronic pop Junior Boys have released a second single from their first album in five years Big Black Coat, following the release of the title track Big Black Coat earlier this year. No One’s Business – Junior Boys This new video is evocative and distressing but the music is still chill and velvety. It shows a man doing shaving, wearing makeup and doing very creepy stuff. The set up itself is disturbing, but the song has their distinctive, classy sound. Love it!
I thought I would take a detour from our usually themed playlist to bring you 15 tracks I have been listening to lately. I think will also do more of that on my future Tuesday Playlists. M.A.K.U. Soundsystem, Bob Dylan, New Order, Jamie XX, James Bay, Tito Alberti Y Su Orquesta and many more. Those of you who know me might also now that the 15 tracks include recent releases, songs that I had not heard before and songs that popped up again that I have always loved or did not pay attention to before but now have.
Today is my brother´s birthday. Great excuse to make a playlist with songs about brothers. Happy birthday Felipe!
México is a land of musicians galore, constantly supplying wonderful and innovative sounds and songs, but in the 1990´s there was a band who ruled undisputed over all others: Café Tacuba. The video that introduced me to the band was this one, María. Its the name of the band’s debut album, released by Warner Music México on july 28th, 1992. I remember it was such a different thing to what was making the rounds on MTV en Español at the time…I immediately loved it. Since the beginning, the band wanted to be faithful to their Mexican identity. The video stars Read more »
