‘Automaton’ by Jamiroquai

Released on January 27, and already with more than 2 million views, Jamiroquai are back with a new song, video and album after a 7-year hiatus.   In Jay Kay´s words: “The inspiration for Automaton is in recognition of the rise of artificial intelligence and technology in our world today and how we as humans are beginning to forget the more pleasant, simple, and eloquent things in life and in our environment including our relationship with one another as human beings,” Their 8th album, also called Automaton,  brings the signature funk style back, but the sound is feisty, it is poignant Read more »

‘Waiting for the Stars’ by Vitalic feat. David Shaw And The Beat

‘Waiting for the Stars’ by Vitalic feat. David Shaw And The Beat

The latest video release from this French artist is winningly strange and funky. Pascal Arbez-Nicolas aka Vitalic has been around for a good few years now. His 2005 debut lp Ok Cowboy was a particular favourite of one half of this blog back in the day and since then he’s been pretty busy, with his fourth studio album proper Vitalic (there’s also a live album and a DJ mix album). I guess you would describe his sound as electroclash disco with attitude if you were looking for a description. But I’m not, so suffice to say it made me jiggle my Read more »

‘On Lankershim’ by Foxygen

‘On Lankershim’ by Foxygen

Directed by Foxygen and Danny Lacy Edited by Foxygen and Danny Lacy Camera by Danny Lacy and Luke Suzimoto This song makes me think of Elton John´s “Tiny Dancer” and of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. But the guys in the video make me think of the strokes. Strange. which is why I had to post. Lankershim is a major street in Los Angeles famous for its prostitution levels. Which is why the lyrics are so poignant Well, we all spent time trying to make it But you spent your money getting high Well I know can make it Read more »

Unforgettable Live Performances: George Michael

Unforgettable Live Performances: George Michael

It has taken me a while to sit down and write this post. I remember the exact moment and time when Paul told me that George Michael had died. I have to say 2016 gave me so many blows in that sense that it didn’t come as a huge surprise, but I am still not over the irony of it being his Last Christmas. I always knew I liked George Michael, and I have defended his voice on more than one occasion, but what I forgot is how present he was when I was growing up, how influential he was, and the Read more »

‘No Plan’ by David Bowie

‘No Plan’ by David Bowie

With a new E.P. released on what would have been his 70th birthday comes this new video for one of his last recordings. This first year after Bowie’s death has been a strange one. The old adage that if you’re famous you’re never more popular than than after you die has certainly been in evidence with interest in his body of work being greater now than at anytime in the last couple of decades or so. His final album, Blackstar, has proved to be a last great flourish from an artist who never stopped moving and exploring new ground. Immediately Read more »

The 2016 MVD Awards

We think it’s fair to say that 2016 was, for various reasons, a memorable year. Of course, we are a music site and as such couldn’t possibly comment on Brexit, Trump, Putin, Syria, or any of that, and so we won’t. Instead we bring you a few of our favourite things, beginning with… Single of the year – ‘Wow’ by Beck There were other contenders amongst the various new releases we’ve brought you this year, but it was this wonderful slice of wierdness from the ever-brilliant Beck that topped the pile this year. he’s been around for a long time Read more »
